October 4, 2017
Dear Sunrise Families:
I would like to make you aware of an emergency procedures exercise we will be conducting at our school on November 6, 2017.
The transportation department will be working with the schools in October and November to practice emergency evacuations. The emergency plans for all of our schools include the option to evacuate the students and staff to the Linn County Fair and Expo Center. If an emergency evacuation was necessary, students and their teachers would be bused to the Expo Center and they would stay there until they could be picked up by their families. The school would provide supervision for the students and oversee the turnover to the families. The Expo Center staff would not be asked to feed the children but they would be asked to provide shelter and restrooms. Parents would use the Expo Center parking lot when picking up their student(s).
- · Many of our students are accustomed to school buses because they ride them every day, but others never ride the bus and therefore have no familiarity. During the training, students will load the buses and be taught bus safety by the drivers. The buses will not take the students anywhere this time, but the idea of the training is to practice loading for the same reason students practice leaving the building for a fire drill.
- If a school evacuation to the Fair and Expo Center is ever necessary, families will be notified. If the situation at the school is such that the building is to be evacuated, law enforcement personnel will likely close off the surrounding neighborhood and prevent anyone from accessing the school Emergency responders will instead direct family members to pick up their child at the Fair and Expo Center.
Parents should understand that there will be delays in picking up their child at the Expo Center as the school staff will be ensuring that students leave the Fairgrounds only with authorized adults.
